Thorpe Way Action-Packed day!
Sunny days have been few and far between this summer, but on Saturday 12
th May the sun shone, and a bunch of people from City Church and Barnwell Baptist Church got together for the Thorpe Way action day. We divided into small teams and rolled up our sleeves to tackle a whole range of practical tasks for people living in and around Thorpe Way. Jobs included laying a new lawn, mending furniture, painting, rubbish clearance and much more besides. The City Council partnered with us to provide 2 huge skips for dumping the items that folk had asked us to clear from local homes and gardens.
We’d received 20 requests for help in the days leading up to the event, and were approached on the day with additional requests. This broke the record for the number of tasks tackled on previous Action Days!
Being invited into people’s homes to do jobs created a great opportunity to chat, and a number of significant conversations were had during the course of the day.
Another big attraction was the free BBQ on offer for anyone who turned up at Thorpe Way rec where we were based. Children’s faces lit up when, following the aroma of sizzling sausages and burgers, they wandered over from the playground and found that there sometimes is such a thing as a free lunch!
So the Action Day was a huge success, and it was a real thrill to be part of it. More such events are planned for the future, and there has been a very positive response to the offer of putting on an Action Day in Ditton Fields in the Autumn.
